It’s National Poetry Month!

Here are 5 tips to keep in mind while you write your poems.

April 9, 2025

Hi, folks!

It’s that time of year again! Time to dust off poetry books sitting on our TBRs for forever, try our hands at styles we never thought we would, or finally write that piece that’s been nagging at us for a while.

If you’re planning on doing the writing* part, here are five tips to keep in mind.

*Fun fact, it’s also National Poetry Writing Month!

Tip 1: Get the ideas out first

Even if you want to make it rhyme or follow a set rhythm, get your ideas out as they come, and you can tidy them up later.

Tip 2: Don’t force a pattern

Readers can tell when you throw a rhyme in for the sake of making the rhyme. If the rhyme isn’t working, switch it up!

Tip 3: Get rid of the “that’s not poetry” fear

You know, the fear that the popular poetry isn’t “actually” poetry. It IS, and if that’s the style you feel comfortable writing, you should go for it.

Tip 4: Write as raw as you want/need to

Poetry is, quite often, incredibly emotional. Don’t be afraid to lean into that, especially in your first drafts.

Tip 5: Have fun!

A lot of writers can find themselves in the pitfall of forgetting why they started writing in the first place – enjoyment! Try to enjoy yourself, whether you’ve been doing this for a week or ten years ❤️

Bonus Tip: Consider an editor

If you’re looking to publish your poetry, a poetry editor can help you take the first step.

I’ve got availability as early as June. Reach out for your quote!

Happy writing!
