Hey, folks!
Winter is almost officially here in the Northern Hemisphere! While December 21 is technically the official start, I view December 1 (or, really, November…) as the start. Sometimes seasons are more about the *vibes*. And in Ontario, the vibes start early.
And I don’t know about you, but I’m in the minority of people who love winter – it’s my favourite season. Not because of winter sports (I don’t really do those), but because of the sights and sensations. I love softly falling snow, twinkling lights, crisp air…
But I’m getting ahead of myself.
Looking to write about winter for your project? Look no further! Here are 15 writing prompts to get you started. The first three shouldn’t be a surprise 😉
1) Softly falling snow.
2) Twinkling lights, especially against that snow.
3) Crisp, cold air.
4) A snow storm – is it pretty? Is it blocking you in? What do you do while it’s happening?
5) Winter vacation.
6) Gifting presents (and getting them).
7) Regional/cultural celebrations (Christmas, Kwanzaa, Yule, etc.)
8) The beginning of a new year and/or the end of the current one (whenever that may be for you).
9) The longest night of the year.
10) Cold weather vs. hot weather – which do you prefer? Why? Compare how both make you feel.
11) Winter sports, whether it’s from the POV of a first-timer or a seasoned athlete.
12) Tobogganing – is it from the POV of a child? Their first time? Or is it from the POV of an adult?
13) Snow crunching underfoot.
14) Maybe where you live doesn’t get snow – explore your perspective on that.
15) Drinking hot cocoa/warm cider by the fire.
Do any of those inspire you to write a winter-themed project? If so, tell me about it! I’d love to hear what you come up with (even if it turns out you don’t love winter like I do 😜).
Want help editing that project? I offer a variety of developmental editing, copy editing, and proofreading. Let’s get your project in tip-top shape!
